THE HIVE / MANOR LODGE PRIMARY
The Hive was a project supported by Yorkshire Artspace for their School of Makers initiative: bringing craft and making skills to schools around sheffield. This was part of an ongoing partnership with Manor Lodge Primary and took place during their fantastic art week. http://artspace.org.uk/articles/school-of-makers/
A hive of activity!
I was asked to come up with a workshop for the class to take part in that would teach them new skills, and an understanding of ceramics as a practice. The class had been learning about bees, so I decided to focus on the communal activity of hive making.
Using slab building techniques the children worked together like a hive building a collection of hexagonal pots. We spent time developing mark making and patterns to apply to the pots to be decorated in shades of golden honey yellows. And we looked at the different types of bees, using offcuts from our potsthe kids had a chance to get expressive, making their own bees to populate the hive. The class also had the chance to visit the studio so I could introduce them to the tools, equipment and processes involved in using clay.
